Coaching Staff
CALVIN SIMON - VARSITY HEAD COACH
Calvin enters his 8th season as the head coach of the Sabers. During that time he has helped lead the team to a AA State Consolation Championship, a Section 2AA Championship and two consecutive South Suburban Conference Championships.
Calvin is actively involved in the Shakopee Youth Hockey Association working to help grow the game of hockey at all levels in Shakopee. From 2022-2025 he served as a board member of the local organizing committee that hosted Hockey Day Minnesota 2025 in Shakopee at that iconic Valleyfair Amusement Park.
Calvin grew up in Shakopee, where he played youth and high school hockey. As a junior, he helped lead the boys high school team to our first ever Section Championship and State Tournament Appearance. After high school, Calvin accepted a scholarship to play college football at Concordia University, St. Paul where he graduated with a BA in Business.
He resides in Shakopee, with his wife (Whitney), their son (Cyrus), and daughter (Winnie) along with their two dogs (Huxlee & Lincoln) and their cat (Bootsy).
MIKE TERWILLIGER - VARSITY ASSISTANT
This season marks Coach Terwilliger’s 34th year of coaching hockey, a career that began while he was still in college. Over the years he has coached every level of the game—from Rookie Camp through High School—and brings more than two decades of high school coaching experience to Shakopee. His background includes head coaching roles at Bloomington Jefferson (2018–2022) and Eden Prairie (2022–2025), along with additional coaching stops at Eden Prairie, Edina, and Jefferson. He also spent six years working with Minnesota Hockey, serving as the Hockey Programs Manager and playing a key role in statewide player and coach development.
Mike is a graduate of Edina High School, where he played hockey from 1987–1989. During his three-year varsity career, Edina advanced to the State Tournament each season, earning a State Championship in 1988 and a Consolation Championship in 1989. He was named All-Conference and Team MVP as a senior. He continued his playing career at St. Lawrence University (ECAC) from 1989–1993, where he was a four-year letterwinner and helped the Saints reach the NCAA Quarterfinals in 1992.
In addition to an accomplished hockey career, Mike was an elite multi-sport athlete. He played tennis at Edina from 1986–1989, winning three straight State Team Championships and capturing the State Individual Championship in 1989 after finishing as the State Runner-Up as a ninth grader.
Mike has taught in Eden Prairie for more than 20 years and currently serves as a 4th grade teacher. He resides in Eden Prairie with his wife, Cara, and has two children: Charlie (21) and Alice (17).
BRYAN FUSS - Varsity Assistant
Bryan joins the Saber Boys Hockey staff with more than 17 years of coaching experience across youth, high school, Tier 1, and professional development settings. His coaching background includes one season with the Madison Capitols Youth Program, three seasons with the Sioux Falls Power Tier 1 organization, one season with the Sioux Falls Flyers Bantam A team, and two seasons as an Assistant Coach with Totino-Grace High School. He also spent nearly a decade at Minnesota Made Hockey in Edina as a Lead Instructor, Coaching Director, and Director of the Minnesota Machine Boys program.
Bryan grew up playing in the Madison Capitols AAA Tier 1 program and was drafted into the USHL by the Des Moines Buccaneers. He spent two seasons in the USHL before earning a Division I scholarship to Lake Superior State University. After four years of college hockey, Bryan went on to begin his professional playing career.
Bryan brings a strong passion for player development, competitive excellence, and a deep understanding of the modern game. He is excited to continue that work as a member of the Shakopee Sabers Varsity staff.
He resides in Eden Prairie with his wife, Brooke, and they have two sons: Sam (28) and Jack (24).
SAM FUSS - VARSITY ASSISTANT
Sam joins the Saber Boys Hockey coaching staff after three seasons at Hopkins High School. He also works with the Minnesota Blades and Crossbar Hockey Training in the offseason as a skills and development coach. Growing up in a hockey family, Sam brings a grounded, disciplined approach to his coaching and a strong understanding of what it takes to compete at the high school level.
Sam won a State Championship in 2014 playing for Edina High School. He then spent time in the junior leagues playing in both the NAHL and USHL before playing at Niagara University in Lewiston, New York and then St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota.
He resides in Eden Prairie with his girlfriend, Erin, who also serves the Shakopee community as a coach with the Sabers Dance Team. Together, they are proud to be part of the Shakopee athletic community and dedicated to supporting the growth of its student-athletes.
BUBBA KUBES - JV HEAD COACH
Bubba has been part of the Saber Boys Hockey staff for 7 seasons. During that time, he served as an assistant coach with the Junior Varsity program before taking over as the Junior Varsity Head Coach.
A proud Shakopee High School alumnus, Coach Bubba played for the Sabers from 2010–2014. As a player, he earned MVP and All-Conference honors, and served as an Assistant Captain during his senior season. His love for hockey is big, but his love for Shakopee is even bigger.
Bubba graduated from the University of St. Thomas with a B.A. and currently works as a realtor with Kubes Realty. His lifelong goal is to help bring people closer to Jesus, and he strives to lead by example for his athletes as they grow into strong, grounded young men.
He resides in Shakopee—where he was born and raised—with his wife (Maggie), their two sons (Brooks and Tommy), and their two dogs.
JACK MURPHY - JV ASSISTANT
Jack brings a tremendous amount of passion and excitement to his first season in the Saber Boys Hockey program. Growing up in Prior Lake he is very familiar with the Shakopee community and offers a unique perspective both on and off the ice.
After high school, Jack played junior hockey in the NAHL followed by four seasons of NCAA hockey at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. He recently completed his MBA from the University of Wyoming and has spent the past five years with RBC Wealth Management.
Jack resides in Bloomington with his wife, Meg, and they are expecting their first child in the coming months.
CHRIS BOELTL - SKILLS / DEVELOPMENT COACH
Chris is a renowned hockey skills and development coach who has been a critical component to the recent success of Saber Boys Hockey through his skill development clinics before school and in the offseason months. With over 28 years of coaching experience he has helped positively impact and develop thousands of hockey athletes throughout the Twin Cities metro.
Although a native of St. Paul, MN, Chris began his coaching journey in California working at the Gretzky Roller Hockey Center. He eventually returned home to Minnesota to help lead coaching experiences at Minnesota Made in Edina from 2003-2009. Chris left Minnesota Made to co-found the Ice Edge program in Eden Prairie in 2009-2015 before eventually launching his current venture, Minnesota Performance Hockey (MPH) in 2015. Since then, he formed a strategic partnership with current Sabers Head Coach, Calvin Simon, moved MPH to Shakopee and began growing roots in the development of Shakopee Area hockey athletes.
Chris resides in Farmington with his wife, Aileen, and they have two kids: Aaron (29) and Lex (28).
RYAN ESS - GOALTENDER COACH
Ryan enters his first season with the Saber Boys Hockey coaching staff. He is the co-owner and president of Devinir, a goaltender training program that works with goalies around the world. Ryan and his staff at Devinir also work with the goaltenders in the Shakopee Youth Hockey Association, creating synergy with our goalie development from squirts to varsity.
Coach Ess has been a devoted student of the goaltender position since 1987, working with many goalie coaches throughout his career and most notably spending 10 summers with hockey legend Vladislav Tratiak.
Ryan played high school hockey in Minnesota at The Academy of the Holy Angels from 1996-2000, spending two seasons at the varsity level. During his time at Holy Angels he compiled a 25-4 record with a 1.43 career GAA and nine shutouts. In his junior season alone, he maintained a .83 GAA during a 11-1 campaign. Within that same season he was named Hockey Minnesota Player of the Week by WCCO for capturing six consecutive shutouts and was also a participant in the MSHSL Tournament.
Following his successful high school career, Ryan played Junior A hockey in the AWHL for Great Falls, Montana and Minot, North Dakota where he put up a GAA of 2.44 and had four shutouts in over 40 games played. Additionally, Ryan played Division III hockey at St. Mary’s University. In 50 games played he averaged 2.94 GAA, which currently still leads all goalies who have played more than 10 games for the Cardinals. In his time at St. Mary’s, Ryan collected four MIAC Player of the Week awards and started every game during his senior year. Ryan currently coaches students in Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, Iowa, and Europe.
